  • girl reading bookFight the Summer Slide—Read a Book this Summer!

Summer vacation is great for many things, but research shows that one of the downsides is the loss of the skills and knowledge that students have worked so hard on all school year, known as "the summer slide." By continuing to read during the summer, students can counteract this slide, expand their view of the world, improve vocabulary, explore new genres, and find many enjoyable hours curled up with a book. These summer reading lists include great books for kids at all levels that others have recommended, including their fellow Oakland students!

Check out the closest Oakland Public Library for these titles and other summer reading options. In addition to a free lunch every day at most branches, Oakland libraries plan free activities for students all summer long!

  • green arrow Paul Robeson Central Administration Building to Remain Closed through the Spring
Thank you for your patience as we reorganize in the wake of the flooding and temporary closure of OUSD’s Main Administration Building.

Restoration work is dependent on the outcome of a damage assessment that is currently underway. Given this, we are preparing for the departments traditionally housed at 1025 to finish the school year in other locations. It is unlikely that Central Offices will return to the Paul Robeson Administration Building prior to the end of 2012-13.

The Superintendent's Office has relocated to 2111 International Blvd. The main information line for OUSD, which also serves as the number for the Superintendent's Office, has been changed to (510) 434-7790. The Board of Education telephone number remains (510) 879-8199.
